The Black dog was designed by Mr. George M. Kelson in the early 19th century and is a very popular fly among many tiers today. It is tied in the classic married wing style with a touch of the classic spey style of tying. The Black Dog is written about by Francis Francis and Sir Herbert Maxwell. Francis Francis describes two versions of the Black Dog in his writings. The Maxwell version calls for more color in the wings than in Kelson's original version of the fly.
