My interest in Salmon flies came while guiding on Prince of Wales Island where Steelhead are abundant in the local rivers and streams. As is a common story with many Classic tiers, I became fascinated with the beautiful materials that were associated with Steelhead and Atlantic salmon patterns and, well you know the rest.

I am most interested in the patterns of Traherene, full feather wings, as my flies reflect. His eye for color contrasts and composition are truly amazing! I hope to emulate these characteristics in my tying; continuity, flow composition, proportions, and contrast. In my minds eye these are the key to creating these feathered paintings on a hook.

The collection of materials also allows for some interesting personalities to merge. I have met some really great people over the stint of my Atlantic salmon fly tying career. Unfortunately they have all been over the computer. Some day I hope to actually see someone tie a full dress Salmon fly as my education on the subject has been solely thru pictures and books. I hope sometime to shake hands with some of you, my fellow tiers, although, not many of you can be found here in Florida. I also hope someday to come tight with a big bright Atlantic salmon; maybe this is where we shall meet.
