Monte Smith
Hello, my name is Monte Smith. Born in Oregon in 1964, I have been blessed to be amid some of the finest fishing waters in the country. Introduced to fly fishing by my late grandfather at the age of twelve, I maintained a keen interest in the sport through the years. Around 1992 I discovered the joy of crafting my own flies. Learning to tie as many types of flies as possible, I spent countless hours at the vise steadfastly working my way through a wide range of trout flies, before moving to Speys, Dees, doubles, Waddingtons, tube flies, classic featherwing streamers, and lots of hairwings. Seven or eight years later I became captivated – as many tyers are – by the classic salmon fly. The historian in me appreciates the rich legacy, the artist is drawn to the beautiful components, and the hardcore tyer is challenged by the patience, discipline, and craftsmanship involved in dressing them. Today I am your typical tying nut. I try my hand at fashioning hooks, dyeing materials to suit my whims, tying some old patterns in hand as a challenge, and working across a broad section of tying genres. My primary passion, though, is salmon flies. I create the occasional pattern when the mood strikes, but I am far more interested in the classics of old. I continue to make my home in western Oregon with my wife and two young children. I teach a few salmon tying classes, demonstrate at various shows, contribute to a variety of web projects, and have some flies featured in a few books. In my spare time, I am often found at my tying desk or casting a fly on my local waters. I’ve had the good fortune to meet so many fine tyers who are willing to share their knowledge, materials, and advice. I look forward to meeting others along the way. There is much yet to learn, and I have settled comfortably into the role of life-long student. I am honored to be a part of The Classics alongside the many talented fly dressers showcased here.
Best Regards,
