Nick Kingston Nicholas Kingston
Hello, my name is Nicholas Kingston, and I'm a salmon fly-tyer. Sounds like I'm admitting to an addiction doesn't it? Well I am. I've been tying flies since 1990. My first 'flies' were bait hooks wound with pipe cleaners and coloured with fluorescent pens, and cast off a solid fibreglass spinning rod with 20lb line as my 'fly-line'. Unfortunately I didn't catch many fish although I could cast the length of my garden.

A year later a friend had given me an old rod he didn't use and a reel to match and I was away. My first fish on fly was a tilapia, a noxious species in Australia, which happens to be delicious to eat. By this time I was tying basic flies on a tying kit my parents had given me for Christmas.

My interest in tying salmon flies came when my friend went to Scotland 4 years ago on honeymoon and came back with a framed salmon fly. I looked at the fly and thought 'I can do better than that' and that was the end of the world as I knew it. I am self-taught as far as tying goes, I have read most of the books relating to tying but no-one else I know ties salmon flies. Now my fly tying has taken to Ireland where I fish for trout as often as possible.

The Salmon fly tyers I admire most are Michael Radencich, Sid Glasso, Wayne Luallen, Paul Schmookler, Ed Haas and Al Cohen. In general flies I admire Lefty Kreh, Dave Whitlock, AK Best, Chris Helm and Bob Clouser.

I'm always willing to talk to anyone about salmon flies, hair wings as well as feather wings, or about tying and fishing in general. My email is npkingston@yahoo.com. My website is anselmo.netfirms.com and I also have some flies displayed on Aussiefly.

I look forward to hearing from some of you.

Thanks,

Nick Kingston

Note: Nick was born in England. In 1979 he moved to Australia where he lived until 2001. At present Nick lives in Ireland.
